Valparaiso University head football coach Tom Horne announced the appointment of Stan Rettew as defensive coordinator. Rettew is succeeding Sam Bernardi, who resigned after 14 years to pursue a career in business.

Rettew arrives to Valpo from Si Tanka University in Huron, S.D., where he served as head football coach during the 2002 and 2003 seasons and as athletic director from 2003-04. Prior to his tenure at Si Tanka, Rettew was the head football coach at Mayville (N.D.) State University during the 1997-01 seasons. He also served as athletic director at Mayville State from 1998-2002.

Before becoming the head coach at Mayville State, Rettew was the school's defensive coordinator during the 1992-00 seasons, the special teams coach from 1992-98 and the strength coach from 1991-97. He also served as head softball coach from 1994-98.

Rettew's coaching background also includes stints at Millersville (Penn.) University (defensive line coach, special teams coordinator, 1990-92); Shippensburg (Penn.) University (linebackers coach, special teams coordinator, 1989); North Dakota State (graduate assistant, linebackers coach, university strength coach, 1986-89) and Iowa Wesleyan College (defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, strength coach, head baseball coach, 1984-86).

While coaching at North Dakota State, Rettew helped the Bison to NCAA Division II National Championships in 1986 and 1988.

Rettew earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education/health recreation from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1984 and has completed coursework and comprehensive exams toward a Master of Science in education from North Dakota State.

As a player at Iowa Wesleyan, Rettew earned NAIA All-America honorable mention honors in 1983.
