Valparaiso University head football coach Dale Carlson has announced the 36 members of his 2013 recruiting class which will begin playing for the Crusaders this fall.

“We set out to get bigger and faster in this class," said Carlson. "We needed size, especially on the defensive line, but with athletes who could run. I believe we accomplished those goals with this class."

All 36 incoming Crusaders will be freshmen in the fall. Among the recruiting class are 20 offensive players, 15 defensive players, and one kicker.

“We have good balance as a whole with this class," said Carlson. "We brought in eight offensive linemen, seven wide receivers, two tight ends, and four running backs on offense. On defense, we have eight defensive linemen, three linebackers, and four defensive backs. There is no doubt in my mind that we improved at each position in this recruiting class and filled our needs."

The 36-player recruiting class hails from 11 states, led by seven recruits apiece from Florida and Michigan. Five incoming freshmen come from Illinois, while three natives of California, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio are coming in as well.

"Our coaching staff did an excellent job securing this class," said Carlson. "We brought in recruits on a national scope again this year. This happens with a dedicated group of coaches working tirelessly on the road, over the phone, and on prospects' campus visits. Valparaiso’s academic reputation, job placement rates, and faculty were a major factor in these student-athletes choosing to play football and continue their academic careers in Northwest Indiana. We are working with a few more prospects to finish the class.”

The 36 players will arrive in August for preseason conditioning and practice before opening the regular season on Thursday night, Aug. 29, when the Crusaders travel to play at the University of North Dakota.
