David Macchi, Valpo's all-time leader in total offense and passing yards, has signed a professional contract to play quarterback for the Bergamo Lions in Italy. Macchi, who established 11 school records, helped the Crusaders capture the Pioneer Football League Championship in 2003.

In just two seasons (2002-03) at Valpo, Macchi set school career records for total yards (7,628), passing yards (7,089) and passing touchdowns (59). In addition, Macchi eclipsed single-game records for passing yards (452 vs. Jacksonville, 2003), completions (32 vs. Austin Peay, 2002) and touchdown passes (5 vs. San Diego, Drake and Aurora, 2003).
