The winter weather that crashed the better part of spring practices will evacuate Northwest Indiana just in time for the 2016 Brown vs. Gold spring football game. Head football coach Dave Cecchini's team will be on display Saturday morning for the first time since November 21st of last year. Kickoff at Brown Field is scheduled for 11:00 am.
Faced with the logistical obstacle of one healthy quarterback for the second straight spring, the 2016 Brown vs. Gold game will feature a more traditional offense vs. defense exhibition. Modified scoring will be implemented. The defense can tally points in a number of different ways: stopping a fourth down, forcing a three-and-out, pass break-up/deflection, etc. In addition to accumulating points the traditional way, the offense can also score by gaining a first down, successfully completing a pass, converting on fourth down, etc.
A weather forecast calling for ample sunshine and 70 degrees Saturday will come as a welcome reprieve from the rain, snow, sleet, and cold temperatures that have plagued the area in recent weeks. The exhibition represents the 14th of 15 spring practice dates allowed. By scheduling the game on the penultimate practice date, Cecchini and his staff will be able to assess his team's play and progress before addressing any points of emphasis during Monday's finale.
Following the game, Cecchini will discuss his impression of Valpo's development over the past few months during a press conference. The team is also expected to announce team captains on Saturday.
Saturday's scrimmage is, as always, free and open to the public.
