Valpo Football Announces Week 2 Team Awards

The Valparaiso University football program announced its team honors for Week 2 on Monday following Saturday’s game at No. 5/4 North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D.

Freshman Jamauri Jackson (San Diego, Calif. / Monterey Trail) was recognized as the team’s Defensive Player of the Week, while Ben Niesner (Black Diamond, Wash. / Tahoma [Portland State]) was named the squad’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

In addition, freshman defensive back Gaillin Mitchell (Cincinnati, Ohio / Elder) was named Scout Team Defensive Player of the Week, freshman tight end Evan Jernegan (Altadena, Calif. / St. Francis) was honored as Scout Team Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore defensive back Josh Gholston (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) garnered Scout Special Teams Player of the Week recognition.

Jackson accrued three tackles including two solos, the first three tackles of his collegiate career. Niesner averaged 43.1 yards per punt and placed a pair of punts inside the 20. He booted a 58 yarder to represent a season long to this point. In addition, the fifth-year senior had Valpo’s longest offensive play of the day, a 17-yard rush for a first down.

Valpo will welcome Ivy League foe Dartmouth to Brown Field for the home opener this week. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. on Saturday with ticket information available at valpoathletics.com/tickets.
