2023: Played in five games, all starts, before incurring a season-ending injury... Went 73-of-141 through the air for 770 yards and six touchdowns... Notched a season-high 20 completions for 225 yards and two scores on Sept. 9 at Indiana Wesleyan... Boasted a season-best 234 passing yards on 16-of-25 through the air with three scores on Sept. 23 vs. Marist... His longest completion of the year was a 53 yarder in the Aug. 31 opener at Youngstown State.

2022: Named the team’s Most-Improved Player and earned a place on the Academic All-PFL Second Team... Completed 149 of 253 passes for 1,878 yards in 11 games... Tossed 10 TD passes while recording a pair of rushing scores... Ranked among the PFL leaders in the following categories – total offense (155.36, seventh), passing yards per game (170.7, fifth), total passing yards (1,878; fifth), pass efficiency (129.55, fifth), pass attempts (253, sixth), yards per completion (12.6, third), completions (149, fifth), yards per attempt (7.42, third), passing TDs (10, eighth) and completion percentage (58.89, third)... Had two TD passes in four different games... Had a season-high 22 completions on Sept. 17 at Dartmouth and Oct. 29 at Dayton... Passed for a season-high 323 yards on Oct. 29 at Dayton, Valpo’s best single-game passing performance since 2017... Had a season-long 67-yard pass in the game against the Flyers.

Fall 2021: Did not see game action... Named the team’s Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year.

Prep: Three-year varsity letter winner… Springboro Offensive Back of the Year, Springboro Scholar-Athlete Award (highest GPA), conference special mention, conference all-academic team, member of first Springboro football team to win an OHSAA Division-I home playoff game… Went 29-of-37 for 344 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions on Oct. 24, 2020 vs. Miamisburg… Also played baseball all four years of high school … Member of National Honor Society… Principal’s List (honor roll) every quarter of high school.

Personal: Majoring in computer engineering… Son of Melanie and Mike Appel… Has a younger brother, Matthew and a younger sister, Lauren… Has two family members who played football at Morehead State University – father Mike (1993-1997) and uncle Jim (1989-1992)… The Morehead State annual academic award is named after his father and uncle as both were Academic All-Americans at MSU… Enjoys playing Call of Duty and outdoor recreational games including frisbee, cornhole, can jam, bottle bash and ladder golf.
