Tim Smith finished his first season as the wide receivers coach at Valpo in 2022.

In his first season on staff, Smith helped the team win three league road games in the same year for the first time since 1962. The Beacons went 3-1 in league road contests, the first time Valpo had won three PFL road games in the same season since the league was founded in 1993. The offense played a key role in those road victories as its 463 yards of total offense on Oct. 8 at Presbyterian was the program’s highest single-game total of the Landon Fox Era and one of three times that the 2022 squad eclipsed 400 yards of total offense, also including a 45-24 win at Marist. Smith was part of the program’s first ever win at Marist and first win at Morehead State since 2006.

Under Smith’s guidance, wide receiver Solomon Davis was selected to the All-PFL First Team after entering the season with one total catch over his first three collegiate campaigns. Wide receiver Matt Ross was named All-PFL Honorable Mention.

In Smith’s first season, the team ranked in the top five in the PFL in the following offensive categories – total offense (340.9), turnovers lost (16), passing efficiency (140.4), rushing offense (125.7, fourth), passing offense (215.2), and fewest passes had intercepted (10, fourth). The offense moved the chains for 217 first downs, the program’s most in a single season since 2014. The unit improved from the previous season in the following categories – first downs, interceptions thrown, passing offense, passing yards/completion, passing efficiency, total offense and turnovers lost. The program enjoyed its best season in terms of total offense since 2017 and had the program’s best passing offense since 2018.

Smith came to Valpo after serving as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Lincoln University in Oxford, Pa. from fall 2018 to January 2022. He previously served as the offensive coordinator at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Va. in Fall 2017, leading the team to a state championship. He was the head coach for boys varsity track & field during the Spring 2017 campaign after serving as an assistant coach the previous season. He was also part of the Oscar Smith football staff in 2015 and 2016 as the wide receivers coach.

Smith’s playing career reached the professional ranks with the Edmonton Eskimos (Canadian Football League, 2016), Hamilton Tiger Cats (CFL, 2015), Cleveland Browns (training camp, NFL, 2014) and Seattle Seahawks (NFL, rookie mini-camp, 2014). He was a four-year player at the University of Virginia, where he graduated in May 2013 with a degree in sociology.

Anthony Poindexter, Co-Defensive Coordinator, Penn State University: “Tim is a great young man. He is a very talented coach but an even better person. Any program should be excited to have him work with their student-athletes.”

Mike London, Head Coach, William & Mary: “Tim Smith was a tremendous player for us at Virginia and an even better human being. He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve been around as a player and now as a young coach. His future is bright.
