Valparaiso Head Men's Basketball Coach Homer Drew today announced Samuel Haanpaa, a 6'8" guard from Cornerstone Christian School in San Antonio, Texas has been signed to a National Letter of Intent for the 2006-07 season.

A sharp-shooting native of Kerava, Finland, Haanpaa averaged 27.4 points, 11.6 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 4.1 steals this past season while shooting 47.4% from three-point range. Haanpaa helped guide the Warriors to a 41-7 record and a berth in the National Prep Circuit Championship Game, setting single-season school records in three-point percentage, makes and attempts.

?We're very excited about Samuel who we think fits perfectly with our other recruits," Drew said. ?He's not only a superb three-point shooter with great size, but also an excellent passer and team player."

Haanpaa made his announcement to attend Valpo Monday during a ceremony at Cornerstone at which his number, 22, was retired. Haanpaa was also the recipient of the school's Warrior Award, presented to the top male student-athlete.

?Samuel is going to make an immediate impact at Valpo," said Walter Webb, Haanpaa's coach at Cornerstone. ?He's a great leader with a great work ethic who's a threat to shoot as soon as he crosses half court."

The Crusaders now have 12 players on their roster for next season, with newcomers Haanpaa, Paul Guede, Calum MacLeod and Keaton Frye joining Valpo's eight returnees.
