Valparaiso freshman forward Alec Peters (Washington, Ill./Washington) has been named the Horizon League Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after averaging 22.5 points per game last week.
Peters earns his second weekly honor of the year after an emotional week, one which started out with him visiting his hometown of Washington, Ill. to assist in tornado relief efforts last Monday. Two days later, Peters returned to the hardwood with the Crusaders at Evansville and poured in 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including seven 3-pointers. The 30 points marked the most by a Horizon League freshman since December of 2010 and was the most by a Valpo freshman since Raitis Grafs scored 30 against Belmont in January of 2000.
Then, on Saturday afternoon, Peters helped the Crusaders improve to 3-0 at home with a win over 2013 NCAA Tournament participant James Madison, scoring 15 points in the winning effort. Through six games, Peters ranks second on the team in scoring (14.8 ppg) and is tied for the team lead in rebounding (5.5 rpg).
