Next Up in Crusader Basketball: Valparaiso continues play in the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic on Sunday afternoon, as the Crusaders play their second straight road game at Kent State.
Last Time Out: The Valparaiso men’s basketball team trailed by as many as 14 points before falling 50-48 against Nebraska at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb. on Thursday night. Senior Kevin Van Wijk paced the Crusaders’ furious comeback bid, posting 20 points and six rebounds. The Crusaders ended the game on an 11-2 run to get back to within two points, but a last-ditch three-quarters court shot fell short at the buzzer.

Head Coach Bryce Drew: Bryce Drew returns for his second season at the helm of the Valparaiso men’s basketball program in 2012-2013 after leading the Crusaders to the Horizon League regular season title in his first year as head coach. Drew was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year after guiding Valpo to a 22-win campaign, including a 14-4 mark within the league to capture the title by two games. Drew ascended to the head coaching position on May 17, 2011 after spending six seasons as an assistant and associate head coach with the Crusaders.
Series Notes: For the second consecutive game and the third time in their first four games, the Crusaders are matching up against a team they have faced just twice in program history. Valpo and Kent State have met just twice on the hardwood, with the Golden Flashes winning both previous meeting. The last matchup came way back in Dec. of 1991, however, a 76-45 Kent State victory on its home floor.

- @ValpoBasketball has been picked to win the @HorizonLeague regular season title.
- The Crusaders received 40 of the 44 first-place votes in the #HLMBB preseason poll.
- This marks the first season since 2002-03 (Mid-Con) that @ValpoBasketball has been preseason league favorites.
- The Crusaders were the only team to place two players on the #HLMBB preseason First Team All-League as well.
- @ValpoBasketball has also been tabbed the preseason @HorizonLeague favorite by @CBSSports and @AthlonSports, among others.

...looking back at last year
- @ValpoBasketball claimed its first @HorizonLeague regular season title in 2011-12, winning the crown by two games.
- The Crusaders earned the right to host the #HLMBB postseason tournament by winning the regular season and advanced to the championship game.
- @ValpoBasketball played at Miami in the first round of the postseason NIT, the Crusaders’ 11th postseason trip in the last 17 years.
- The Crusaders won 22 games overall in 2011-12, their 12th 20-win season in the last 19 years.

Still Have to Score to Win
- Despite allowing just 50 points to Nebraska, Valparaiso suffered a two-point loss, 50-48.
- It was the fewest points @ValpoBasketball has given up in a loss since a 41-40 loss to Western Illinois on Jan. 16, 1984.
- Valpo defeated Georgia Southern by 31 points in its opener, its largest season-opening win over a D-I school since moving to D-I.
- @ValpoBasketball has now won eight straight home openers by double figures dating back to 2004.
- Valpo led by as many as 42 points in the season-opening win over the Eagles.
- The Crusaders followed with a 23-point win over Northern Illinois on Tuesday.

- Kent State enters Sunday’s game at 2-1 on the season, following a 92-63 victory over Chicago State on Friday.
- The Golden Flashes have also defeated Drexel in overtime (66-62) and lost to Temple (80-66) this season.

- Van Wijk paced Valpo for the second time this year with 20 points in the loss at Nebraska (6-12 FG; 8-12 FT).
- Van Wijk is coming off a junior season where he was named a First Team All-League selection.
