For the second consecutive week, a Valparaiso University men’s basketball player has been named Horizon League Player of the Week, as this week, senior center Vashil Fernandez (Kingston, Jamaica/Princeton Day [Md.] Academy) claimed the award after leading the Crusaders to a pair of wins.
Fernandez was nearly perfect from the field, going 6-of-7 against both Milwaukee and Green Bay – against the Phoenix, he grabbed the rebound of his only miss and laid it in. He finished with 14 points and nine rebounds – both team highs – in the win over the Panthers on Thursday. Fernandez then posted 13 points and 11 rebounds against Green Bay for his second double-double of the year, while also adding five blocked shots.
On the week, Fernandez averaged 13.5 points, 10 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots per game as Valpo extended its winning streak to five consecutive games. The senior is averaging 8.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game within league play and is within 13 blocked shots of breaking the Crusaders’ all-time record in the category.
