The Valpo men’s basketball program has added another piece to the puzzle for the 2019-20 season, as head coach Matt Lottich announced that Zion Morgan, a 6-5 guard from Chicago, signed with the team and will join the program with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“We have known Zion for a long time and have always enjoyed how hard he competes, how well he defends and the leadership abilities he brings to a team,” said Lottich. “Zion is able to guard the other team’s best players, regardless of position. He can score when needed and is not afraid to work. We expect Zion to bring his no-nonsense, competitive mindset to our program every day. Valpo fans will love Zion’s fight and desire.”

Morgan played last season at Wabash Valley College after redshirting there the previous season due to injury. This year, he helped lead the Warriors to a 25-8 record, a berth in the national top-25 poll and a spot in the Region 24 Championship game. His season was highlighted by a 25-point, seven-rebound effort against eventual national champion Vincennes.

Prior to transferring to Wabash Valley, Morgan played his freshman season at UNLV in 2016-17. Morgan appeared in 27 games for the Runnin’ Rebels, starting on five occasions and averaging 2.8 points per game.

Morgan was prep teammates with Nick Robinson at Kenwood Academy in Chicago. He averaged nearly 15 points per game and pulled down five rebounds per game as a senior at Kenwood, helping to lead the Broncos to 22 wins, conference and region titles, and a berth in the city championship game. He was part of back-to-back conference championship teams, and was named to the Chicago Sun-Times All-City Team as a senior.

Morgan becomes the fifth newcomer to join the fold for 2019-20, following the announcement of Donovan Clay, Emil Freese-Vilien, Ben Krikke and Sigurd Lorange last week.
