Crusaders Compete at Notre Dame Invitational

The Valparaiso men’s cross country team hit the trails for the first time in two weeks Friday, placing 19th in the Gold Race at the Notre Dame Invitational, held in Notre Dame, Ind.

The Crusaders accumulated 519 points to finish 19th out of 25 participating schools.  Valpo finished second out of the three Horizon League institutions competing in the Gold Race, defeating Green Bay.  Grand Valley State captured the team title with 93 points.

Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) led Valpo for the second time in three races this year, crossing the line in 55th place with a time of 26:04.  Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) was the next-highest Crusader finisher, covering the 8K course in 26:45, good for 103rd place.

Leandro Schultz (Valley View, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) followed with a 126th place finish, coming home in 27:07.  Rich Krupar (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) placed 133rd with a time of 27:13, while Jordan Stanfill (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) rounded out the Crusaders’ top-five with a time of 27:28, good for 148th place.

Valparaiso returns to action in two weeks, splitting the squad on Saturday, October 13.  Some runners will compete at the Evansville Invitational, while others will race at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, with both races slated to cover eight kilometers.
