Valpo Competes at Notre Dame Invitational

The Valparaiso men’s cross country squad continued its 2008 campaign Friday with an 18th place showing at the Notre Dame Invitational gold race.

The Crusaders tallied 505 points to place 18th out of the 23 competing teams at Notre Dame.  North Central College took the team crown with 93 points.

Pacing Valpo was senior Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]), who placed 61st with a time of 26:15 over the eight-kilometer course.  He was followed by Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville), who crossed the line with a time of 26:41, good for 101st position.

Rich Krupar (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) was the next Valpo runner across the line, completing the race in 26:59 for a 118th-place finish.  Joel Hartenberger (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) came home in 131st place with a time of 27:13, while Leandro Schultz (Valley View, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) rounded out the Crusader scorers with a 140th-place showing in a time of 27:27.

Valparaiso returns to action in two weekends at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute.  The men’s race is slated for an 11:10 a.m. CDT start time.
