Cross Country Honored for Academic Excellence

The Valparaiso University cross country teams have received recognition from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their hard work in the classroom this year.


Valpo Cross Country Ends Season at NCAA Regionals


The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s cross country teams finished their 2017 seasons on Friday afternoon at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The men finished 24th and the women came in 30th. Both squads defeated Missouri Valley Conference foe Evansville and the men also bested Green Bay. Seniors Sidney Noble and Kim Heiny led the charge for the Crusaders.


Valpo Cross Country Races at MVC Championships


The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the program’s first Missouri Valley Conference Championships, which were hosted by Missouri State on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders were led by seniors Sidney Noble and Kim Heiny in the 8K and 5K races. Both squads defeated Evansville at the meet.


Crusader Cross Country Wraps Up Regular Season at Bradley Classic


The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s cross country teams ended their regular seasons at the Bradley “Pink” Classic Friday afternoon. At the Classic, the Crusaders faced several Missouri Valley Conference schools, providing a small preview of the Conference championships in a couple weeks. Along with host Bradley, five other MVC schools raced at the meet alongside the Crusaders. Senior Kim Heiny (Burnettsville, Ind./Twin Lakes) led the women and sophomore Victor Fortin (East Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) crossed first for the men.


Heiny, Zibricky Lead Cross Country at Notre Dame


The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s cross country teams contested the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon, competing in the Gold Division. The men ran in the five-mile event, while the women raced in the 5K. Senior Kim Heiny (Burnettsville, Ind./Twin Lakes) finished first for the women and junior Ben Zibricky (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) paved the way for the men’s team.


Cross Country Faces Heat at Spartan Invite


The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to East Lansing, Mich. for the Spartan Invitational on Friday morning, battling tough running conditions at the meet with the heat and humidity. Senior Kim Heiny (Burnettsville, Ind./Twin Lakes) led the women in the 6K and sophomore Victor Fortin (East Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) paced the men in the 8K race.


Valpo Begins Season with 29th Crusader Open


A large crowd surfaced at Sunset Hills Farm to watch the Valparaiso University men’s and women’s cross country teams compete in the 29th annual Crusader Open on Friday afternoon. Two runners finished in the top-20 for Valpo: senior Sidney Noble (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) for the men and senior Kim Heiny (Burnettesville, Ind./Twin Lakes) for the women.

Racing smart is a philosophy the Valparaiso University men’s and women’s cross country teams hope to adopt this season. In his 31st season at the helm, coach Mike Straubel wants his athletes to run “smart” and finish strong in races.
