In Gring's second season, the team won three events, including a four-stroke victory over Cleveland State at the Horizon League Championship to earn the program's first bid to the NCAA tournament. The Crusaders also placed first at the Purdue Midwest Shootout in the fall and the Bradley Invitational in the spring. In his first season, Gring saw Kyle Henning earn HL Golfer of the Week honors. Also successes in the classroom, Brad Winters was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon Division I All-America Scholar, while Henning was an Academic All-League selection and the team earned All-Academic Team honors from the GCAA. The Crusaders were one of just 11 programs to earn President’s Special Recognition status, with a cumulative team GPA of at least 3.50.

He played on the U.S. Amateur Tour during the summers of 1986 and 1987. Gring has been the runner-up at the Club Championship at the Course at Aberdeen, Valpo’s home course, three times.
