Valpo Men 13th After Two Rounds in Tennessee

Valparaiso wrapped up the first two rounds of the Big Blue Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee State in 13th place on Monday after shooting its lowest score of the season, 299, in the opening round and finishing with a total of 604 at King’s Creek Golf Club in Spring Hill, Tenn.

The Crusaders carded the 299 in round one, three shots better than its previous best this season.  All four scoring rounds were 77 or lower, before the Brown and Gold responded with a score of 305 in round two.  Valpo trails 12th place Tennessee-Martin by nine shots and leads Alabama State by six strokes heading into the final round on Tuesday.

Austin Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger H.S.) carded rounds of 73 and 74 for a to tie for 28th overall with a two round total of 147 on the 6,740-yard, par-70 layout.  Brad Winters (Elgin, Ill./Saint Edward H.S.) matched Gaugert’s 73 in the first round before shooting 76 in round two (149).

Andy Webb (Bedford, Ind./North Lawrence H.S.) carded rounds of 77 and 75 for a total of 152 while Josh Kalita (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) shot 76-80 (156) for the Crusaders.  Adam Gray (Portland, Ind./Jay County H.S.) rounded out the lineup shooting 161 (79-82).

Murray State leads the tournament with a score of 568 (280-288) while John A. Logan College’s Filip Timmerman leads the overall standings at five-under  par 135 (69-66).

Valparaiso will wrap up the tournament by playing its sixth round in four days on Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m.
