Valparaiso’s men’s golf team closed out the 2011-2012 season on Sunday morning at the Horizon League Golf Championships held at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., posting a seventh place finish as a team.
The Crusaders shot a final round 314 to finish at 928 for the 54-hole event, one stroke behind sixth place Butler and one shot ahead of Youngstown State. Loyola (Chicago) won the team title with a three-round total of 909, two shots ahead of runner-up Green Bay. Cleveland State was third at 915, three shots ahead of Detroit, while Wright State was fifth at 924.
Three players shared the team’s low round of 78 on Sunday over the 6,846-yard, par-72 layout. Austin Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger H.S.) tied for the team’s low tournament honors with Kyle Henning (Brookfield, Wis./East H.S.) as both posted 54-hole totals of 230 to tie for 16th place. Gaugert posted one of the day’s 78s while Henning fired a final round 80.
Thomas Wettstein (Neenah, Wis./Xavier H.S.) and Brad Winters (Elgin, Ill./Saint Edward H.S.) both carded 78s as well in the final round. Wettstein finished the tournament at 234, one stroke ahead of Winters.
Andy Webb (Bedford, Ind./North Lawrence H.S.) added an 82 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 242.
Green Bay’s Chad Ebert won the individual title with a six-over par total of 222, winning by two shots over a trio of players.
