Toman Wins MVC Golfer of the Week Award

A strong start to the fall season for freshman Charlie Toman (Chardon, Ohio / Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) was recognized by the Missouri Valley Conference on Wednesday as Toman was tabbed the MVC Golfer of the Week.

Toman led Valpo at The Invitational at Savannah Harbor by carding a 217 (+1) over 54 holes on Saturday and Sunday. He started the tournament by stroking a 70 (-2) in Round 1 and closed it out with another round of par or better with a 72 (E) in Round 3. Toman had three birdies in the final round and shot par or better on 16 of 18 holes. For the tournament, he had 37 pars and nine birdies. The Valpo freshman finished tied for ninth in a field of 95 golfers, notching his first career Top 10 finish.

“Charlie played very solid for us all weekend,” head coach Dave Gring said following Sunday’s round. “He worked very diligently this winter with his practice in our Golf Room, adding distance to his entire bag. For the first rounds of the year, I was impressed with how sharp his chipping and putting were the entire tournament. His Top-10 finish is well deserved and he’s excited for the spring season.”

This marks the second MVC Golfer of the Week honor of Toman’s young career as he garnered the award on Sept. 5 for his performance in his first collegiate tournament, the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. Toman was named the MVC Golfer of the Week after both his fall and spring college debuts.

Valpo will be back on the course on Monday, March 11 for the first day of the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate in Springfield, Mo.
