Valpo Downs Bulldogs 3-1 in Scrimmage

The Valparaiso University men's soccer team scored twice in the first half on its way to posting a 3-1 victory over Springfield College (Ill.) in its second scrimmage of the preseason, Friday evening at Eastgate Field.

The Crusaders got on the board in the 18th minute as Mickey Miller II (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville H.S.) found the inside of the far post from 20 yards out.

Owen Hoyt made the score 2-0 in the 36th minute, as his blast from 20 yards deflected off of a Bulldog and past goalkeeper Chris Schilling.

Justin Walker cut Valpo's lead in half two minutes later on a header off of a Josh Frye pass from the right side for what proved to be the Bulldogs lone goal of the evening.

The Crusaders outshot Springfield 8-4 in the opening half, and forced Schilling to make three saves. Marc Cilfone (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage H.S.) started in goal for the Brown and Gold, making one stop.

Korba, who assisted on Hoyt's tally, scored the lone second half goal in the 74th minute, heading home a Ryan Wolin (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park H.S.) cross from the left side.

For the match, the Crusaders outshot the Bulldogs 17-7, holding an 8-2 advantage on net. Valpo also held a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks, while Springfield committed 17 fouls to the Crusaders 12.

Valpo improves to 1-0-1 in scrimmages, and will conclude the preseason portion of its schedule on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. match against Oakton.
