Penalty Kick in Second Overtime Dooms Valpo
Sunday, October 17, 2004
After battling for more than 102 of scoreless soccer, Andrew Ornoch's penalty kick goal in the second overtime period lifted Detroit to a 1-0 victory over Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon at Eastgate Field.

The Crusaders were called for a hand ball in the penalty area following a Titan corner kick which set up the penalty kick. Ornoch converted for his fourth goal of the season at the 102:39 mark, giving Detroit its sixth straight victory, including three in a row in overtime.

Valpo seemed to have the run of the play for the majority of the match, outshooting Detroit 18-11 for the match. The Crusaders made Titan goalkeeper Sasha Boskovic make nine saves, including three in the first overtime period, to earn his fifth shutout of the season. The Brown and Gold also won 12 corner kicks, seven in the second half, while holding Detroit to just four for the match.

Crusader netminder Jeff Oleck (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) made three saves in the match to keep it scoreless prior to the penalty kick.

The match saw 38 fouls whistled, including 23 on Detroit (9-4), and six yellow cards were issued total.

Valparaiso (3-7-3) will look to rebound next Sunday as the Crusaders host IUPUI in a key Mid-Continent Conference battle. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Eastgate Field.
