Crusaders Drop Season Finale 3-2 at Wisconsin

The Valparaiso University men's soccer team saw its 2003 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, as the Crusaders dropped a 3-2 decision to Wisconsin in Verona, Wis.

The Crusaders struck first just 6:08 into the match as Adam Newell (Indianapolis, Ind./Center Grove H.S.) concluded his career with his second goal of the season. Freshman Jeremy Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills H.S.) drew the assist for the Brown and Gold.

The Badgers tied the match before halftime as Aaron Hohlbein scored at the 35:16 mark. Wisconsin outshot Valpo 10-5 in the opening half, including a 6-3 advantage on net.

The match remained tied until the 72:45 mark when Hamid Afsari scored his first goal of the season to give the hosts the lead. Matthew Jelacic added what would prove to be an insurance goal with 2:34 remaining for the Badgers.

Valpo struck one final time with just nine seconds as a pair of freshmen teamed for the tally. Henrik Turk (Grayslake, Ill./Mundelein H.S.) tallied his first collegiate goal, while Mark Wolka (Shelby Township, Mich./Lutheran North H.S.) received credit for the helper.

Wisconsin (10-9-1) outshot Valpo 18-9 for the match and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Jeff Oleck (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) made nine stops for the Crusaders in goal, while Eric Hanson made three saves for the Badgers.

Valparaiso ends its season with a 2-13-2 record.
