D.J. Catrow Scores Twice but Valpo Falls in California
Monday, September 04, 2006For the second straight match D.J. Catrow (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic Central) scored two goals, but Monday night it was not enough as Valpo lost for the first time all season, falling 3-2 at Sacramento State in the final match of the Copa de Causeway Tournament.
Catrow, who scored twice in Valpo's tournament opener Saturday at UC-Davis, tallied in the 51st and 64th minutes Monday afternoon, tying him with Paul Leitlet (Munster, Ind./Munster) for the team lead in goals. Each player has scored twice in two matches, and the duo has combined for eight of the Crusaders' 12 goals through the first four contests of the year.
With the two goals, Catrow now has 12 in his career and has reached 35 points in a Valpo uniform since transferring from Ohio State before his sophomore season. With three more points, the senior will crack Valpo's all-time top 10 list, matching Paul Arndt who played four seasons in the mid-1980's.
Monday, Catrow tied the match at one in the 51st minute, taking a Jon Brighton (Warner Robins, Ga./Houston County) cross and one-timing a shot past the keeper. After a pair of Hornet goals made it 3-1, Catrow again scored, driving home a J.J. Eschenburg (Edgewood, N.M./Moriarty) pass to pull Valpo within one.
The Crusaders out-shot Sacramento State 17-12 in the match, including an 11-7 edge on goal, but Hornet keeper Nick Garigiulo made eight saves to earn the victory. Ryan Schwarz (Rockford, Ill./Bolyan Catholic) made four saves for the Crusaders but suffered the first defeat of his young career.
Jack Jones scored two of the hosts' three goals, including the match winner in the 63rd minute. Sacramento State (1-3) earned their first win of the season in their home opener, and the decision meant all three teams at the Copa de Causeway Tournament went 1-1.
Valpo (3-1) will return to the friendly surroundings at Eastgate Field for their next four matches, including Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Western Michigan. That match will be carried live on 95.1 FM, WVUR, and online at www.valpo.edu/athletics.
