The Valparaiso men's soccer program's annual St. Baldrick's fundraiser reached new heights this past weekend, raising over $52,000 to fund research for cures for childhood cancers. 93 heads were shaved in a 30-minute span at the ARC, with over 130 heads shaved in total including Valparaiso University President Mark Heckler and his wife, Veronica. Over $150,000 has been raised over the past five years to fight childhood cancer and this year’s saw the most funds raised as well as the most heads shaved at Valpo.
The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Since 2000, nearly 200,000 volunteers -- including more than 17,200 women -- have shaved in solidarity with children with cancer at events in dozens of countries and every U.S. state. Thanks to generous friends and family, these shavees have raised over $117 million for life-saving research.
