Campbell Named HL Goalkeeper of the Year; Madrid All-League

Valparaiso junior goalkeeper Nico Campbell (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George’s College) has been tabbed the Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year and a First Team All-League honoree as the league announced its postseason award recipients on Monday. In addition, junior Isaiah Madrid (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado [FGCU]) earned a spot on the Second Team All-League squad.

Campbell was named the Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year and an All-League honoree for the first time after another standout season in net for the Crusaders. The junior played every minute in goal for Valpo this season, leading the league with a 0.76 GAA and eight shutouts.

Along the way, Campbell backstopped the Crusader defense as it set a new program record during the season for the longest shutout streak (582 minutes) and matched a team record with five consecutive clean sheets. Campbell, who finished the season second in a single season in program history for both GAA and shutouts, becomes the third different Valpo goalkeeper to earn Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year honors, as the Crusaders have now claimed five Goalkeeper of the Year accolades in their nine years in the league.

Madrid picks up Second Team All-League honors following a strong season on the attack for the Crusaders in his first year in the Valpo kit. Madrid paced the Crusaders with five goals and 12 points, adding a pair of assists as well. Four of the junior’s five goals were of the match-winning variety, a league high and good for 15th nationally. Among Madrid’s goals was the match-winning effort in the Crusaders’ win at #18 Western Michigan, while he also assisted on the game-tying goal late at #23 New Mexico.
