Valparaiso finished in fourth place on Friday evening as the Crusader men’s swimming and diving team opened the 2007-2008 season at the Dennis Stark Relays hosted by Notre Dame.

The Crusaders finished with 118 points, easily outdistancing fifth place Marquette in the team standings.  Oakland was one spot ahead of Valpo while Notre Dame won the team title with 242 points.

Adam Jajtner (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington H.S.) and Blake Edwards (Orange, Calif./Lutheran H.S. of Orange County) led the way for the Crusaders with a runner-up finish in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:02.62.  The duo was nearly five seconds in front of third place.

Valpo also finished with third place efforts in the 400 butterfly relay and the 400 breaststroke relay.

“We had a solid meet all the way around,” head coach Bryan Morrison said.  “Lots of strong swims are a good precursor for the season to come.”

The Crusaders return to the pool on Saturday morning for the annual alumni meet beginning at 9 a.m.  Valpo then opens the dual meet season at 1 p.m. CDT at Cleveland State next Saturday, October 13.
