Valpo Men Open Season with Solid Swims

            David Sivak (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) won two events and Victor Sikorski (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler H.S.) added another victory as Valparaiso opened the 2008-2009 swimming and diving season on Sunday afternoon with a double-dual meet in Fishers, Ind.  The Crusaders dropped a close 131-104 decision to Evansville and fell to Saint Louis 150-82.

            Sivak, a sophomore, won by more than 3.5 seconds in the 200 individual medley with his time of 1:57.50, the third fastest mark in the event in school history.  Later in the day, he came back with nearly a second win in the 200 breaststroke with, touching the wall in the eighth fastest mark ever at Valpo, 2:16.91.  In between the two races, Sivak earned a runner-up mark in the 100 freestyle with his time of 47.80 seconds.

            Sikorski, making his collegiate debut, swam the second fastest 50 freestyle time ever for the Crusaders on his way to a 0.34 second win.  The freshman finished in a time of 21.25 seconds.

            Sikorski also led off Valpo’s 400 freestyle relay which finished in second place.  He teamed with Adam Jajtner (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington H.S.), Austin Hunter (La Crescent, Minn./La Crescent H.S.), and Thomas Patrick (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) to post a mark of 3:19.48.

            Individually, Jajtner finished third in a pair of events for Valpo.  The senior turned in a time of 10:27.42 in the 1000 freestyle while returning to swim a time of 5:03.76 in the 500 free.

            Kurtis Malone (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S.) finished second on the one-meter diving board scoring 221.90 points while Ansel Hillmer (Tampa, Fla./Hillsborough H.S.) placed third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.69.

            Valparaiso (0-2) will return to the pool on Friday, October 17 for its home opener.  The Crusaders will entertain Xavier (Ohio) at the Athletics-Recreation Center pool beginning at 5 p.m.
