Crusader Swimming Competes at Indiana Intercollegiates
Gonzalo Castro Diaz earned a tenth-place finish and also led off the Crusader relay which finished fourth.

The Valparaiso University men’s and women’s swimming teams traveled to West Lafayette, Ind. on Saturday, continuing their 2015-16 season at the Indiana Intercollegiates, hosted by Purdue University.

The Crusader men finished the day in eighth place, totaling 85 points for the meet. Meanwhile, the Valpo women finished the day with 78 points, good for seventh position. Host Purdue came home with the team title on both the men’s and women’s side.

The Crusaders’ men’s 200 yard freestyle relay team of Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Oxford), Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), Tim Mitchell (Lakeville, Minn./North) and Colten Lawson (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) posted the squad’s top finish on Saturday. The quartet earned 32 points after they placed fourth with a time of 1:28.75, just 1.35 seconds behind second place.

Castro Diaz also brought home seven points for Valpo in the 100 yard butterfly (52.63) and five points in the 200 freestyle (1:46.21). Jenny also scored 11 points in the 100 yard freestyle (48.70) to add to the Crusaders men’s total.

On the women’s side, the Crusaders’ 200 yard medley relay team of Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves), Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine), Rachel Law (Wayne, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Amanda Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) scored 24 points with a time of 1:58.67.

Individually, Law led the way for Valpo, picking up an eighth-place finish and scoring 11 points for the Crusaders in the 500 yard freestyle, as she finished with a time of 5:23.53.

Valparaiso will be back in action on Friday, November 6th as the Crusaders travel to Macomb, Ill. to face Western Illinois at 5 p.m.
