Bryan Morrison

Head Coach

Bryan Morrison, Ph.D., CSCS, was named head coach of the Valparaiso University swimming and diving program prior to the 2004-2005 season after spending time at Arizona State University & the University of Southern California.

In 2007 he was awarded the Coach Practitioner distinction from the National Strength & Conditioning Association.  There have only been 45 people awarded this honor from over 29,000 professionals in the field.

Since taking over the helm of the Crusaders, Morrison’s athletes have broken 23 school records, and currently hold eight of the top spots all-time on the men’s side and seven of the top times on the women’s side.  In addition, 16 of Morrison’s athletes have earned All Mid-Continent Conference accolades for their performances in the pool.  During the 2006-2007 season, six swimmers earned All-Conference accolades, the most for the Valpo programs since his arrival.

He recently completed his doctorate degree in exercise science from Arizona State titled “The effect of stroke rate and stroke length on drag and energy expenditure in swimming.”  While doing so, Morrison was a part of two research grants related to swimming.

Morrison received his master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Southern California in 2000 after finishing his bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University in biomedical engineering in 1997.  While at Michigan State, Morrison swam freestyle for the Spartans before an injury ended his competitive career and started his coaching career.

At Valparaiso, Morrison is also an assistant professor of physical education and is also the Director of the Exercise Science program.
