Kooyers Wins Opening Round Match at ITA Omni Regional

Valparaiso University freshman Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) posted a straight sets victory, while teammate Ben Dunham-Freer (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands H.S.) lost a three-set match in the first round of qualifying at the ITA Omni Regional Championships held in East Lansing, Mich. on Thursday evening.

Kooyers defeated Paul Glendenning of Illinois-Chicago 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round against second-seeded Eric Langenkamp of Notre Dame on Friday morning. That match is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. CDT. Kooyers needs to win two matches on Friday to advance to the main draw.

Dunham-Freer dropped the opening set to Jeremy Miller of Xavier (Ohio), before evening the match. He ultimately dropped the three-set match 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Dunham-Freer will compete with Jeff Vrabel (Allen Park, Mich./St. Francis Cabrini H.S.) in the main draw of doubles beginning on Saturday morning. Their first round opponents are Marko Marevic and Mark Muskievicz of Bradley.
