Crusaders Defeated by Toledo 6-1

Valparaiso concluded its weekend trip to Ohio on Saturday afternoon and suffered a 6-1 loss to Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.

Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory at fourth singles for the Brown and Gold's lone point. The first doubles team of Shideler and Ben Dunham-Freer (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands H.S.) also earned an 8-6 win, but the Rockets won the other two doubles contests to earn the point.

Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) and Shabbi Khan (Karachi, Pakistan/Oasys H.S.) fell 8-2 at second doubles while Joe Venegas (Saint Charles, Ill./North H.S.) and Blain Keller (Muncie, Ind./Delta H.S.) dropped an 8-5 match at the third spot.

In other singles action, Kooyers fell 7-5, 6-2 at the top spot while Dunham-Freer lost in a super tie-break 6-2, 6-7, 10-8. Venegas dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision at third while Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) fell by the same score at fifth singles. Khan dropped a 7-6, 6-3 decision at the sixth spot.

Valparaiso (2-9) will return to action on Friday afternoon as the Crusaders head to DeKalb, Ill. to battle Northern Illinois. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
