Valparaiso yielded just five games total to Wagner on Monday morning as the Crusaders earned their first victory of the 2006 spring season with a 7-0 shutout over the Seahawks in Kissimmee, Fla. to kick off the annual spring trip.
Valpo took control beginning in doubles play. The top team of Nic Kooyers
(Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) and Mike Shideler
(Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) posted an 8-1 triumph over Steve Johnsen and Adam Amster. The Crusaders also won at second doubles by the same score as Dave Bukowski
(Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect H.S.) and Mike Wagner
(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) downed Brandon Segluzzio and Scott Chamberlin.
In singles play the Crusaders allowed just Wagner (0-1) to win three games, recording eight love sets in five matches. Valpo won sixth singles by default. Kooyers was a 6-0, 6-2 victor at the top of the order against Johnsen while Joe Venegas
(Saint Charles, Ill./North H.S.) and Wagner each recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories over Amster and Segluzzio respectively at second and third singles. Shideler posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the fourth spot against Chamberlin and Bukowski won at fifth singles 6-0, 6-0 against Will Shuler.
Valparaiso (1-6) will return to the courts on Tuesday morning to face Fairleigh-Dickinson beginning at 7:30 a.m. CST.
