Valpo Falls in Season Finale 4-3 to UMKC

Valparaiso's season came down to the final match on Saturday morning, but the Crusaders were not able to pull out a victory, falling 4-3 to UMKC in Shreveport, La.

Playing singles first, Valpo jumped in front quickly earning victories at both fifth and sixth spots. David Bukowski (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect H.S.) wrapped up his career with a perfect 4-0 mark in Mid-Con action with his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Joe Kane. Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) added a 6-3, 6-0 win over Darren Chiao as to make it 2-0 Crusaders.

UMKC (6-6, 3-2 Mid-Con) tied the contest with wins at both the second and fourth spots. Pat Smith defeated Joe Venegas (Saint Charles, Ill./North H.S.) 6-1, 7-5 while Erwin Quinanilla downed Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) 6-3, 6-2.

Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) put Valpo in front 3-2 with his three set win 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 against Richard Harrison. Alex Lau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson Senior H.S.) looked to give the Crusaders the victory, but dropped a three set match of his own 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to Dennis Schwarz, and the teams went to doubles tied at three.

Valpo won the first doubles match, 8-3, at the third spot as Bukowski and Wagner topped Kane and Chiao. The Kanagaroos took first doubles 8-5 as Harrison and Smith defeated Lau and Shideler. In the final match of the day, a late break in serve gave Schwarz and Quintanilla a 9-7 victory over Kooyers and Venegas, giving UMKC the victory.

Valparaiso sees its season come to a close with a 4-16 mark, 1-4 in the Mid-Con.
