Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) defeated teammate Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) 6-3, 6-3 to finish in third place in the D flight of singles at the Bradley invitational on Sunday morning, Valparaiso’s highest finish in the tournament.
Shideler finished 2-1 on the weekend, while Stump earned one win in his freshman debut.
Alex Lau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson Senior H.S.) finished in fourth place in the A flight as he dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Bastian Harbo of UIC. The B flight saw Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) down teammate Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) 6-0, 6-4 in the seventh place match. Dan Brunette (Carmel, Ind./Lutheran H.S. of Indianapolis) fell in his C singles contest for seventh place. In the E flight, Phidias Fortune (San Antonio, Texas/New Braunfels H.S.) was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Richard Robertson of Bradley in the consolation championship while Dan Lewallen (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley H.S.) picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jesus Diaz of IUPUI.
“Everyone had at least one match they felt good about this weekend and that is very important,” head coach Jim Daugherty said afterwards. “We also had matches that identified weaknesses. Both are important as we will come back confident yet also know what we need to work on.”
The Crusaders will be back in action next Friday and Saturday hosting the Valpo Fall Classic. First serve each day is set for 9 a.m. in the six team event held at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
