Valpo Downs Adelphi for Season's First Victory

            Valparaiso recorded its first victory during the 2008 spring season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Adelphi 7-2 as part of its spring trip in Orlando, Fla.  The match was played using the nine-point scoring system.

            The Crusaders started the match strong, taking three points in doubles action.  Dan Brunette (Carmel, Ind./Lutheran H.S. of Indianapolis) and Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) teamed for an 8-3 victory at the third spot against Leonard Bruno and Sebastian Nieves.  Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) and Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) downed Alex Molotsky and Tomasz Walczak by the same score at number one doubles.  Alex Lau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson Senior H.S.) and Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) capped the sweep with an 8-2 triumph at the second position against Joseph Carbone and Anton Voynov.

            Lau earned his second straight singles victory at the second spot with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Molotsky.  Wagner clinched the victory, making it 5-0 Crusaders, with his 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Nieves.  The Panthers won two straight matches as Voynov defeated Phidias Fortune (San Antonio, Texas/Madison  H.S.) 6-3, 6-2 at the fourth spot while Walczak downed Shideler 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.  Brunette put Valpo back in the win column with a 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over Nicolas Sanchez-Sousa and Stump topped Pierre Streat 6-4, 6-2 at the sixth spot.

            “We needed this win,” head coach Jim Daugherty said afterwards. “We came in determined and this helps us build confidence.  We will look to build off of this match and create some momentum.”

            Valparaiso (1-7) will wrap up its trip to Orlando on Thursday afternoon as the Crusaders face Southern Illinois-Edwardsville beginning at 12 p.m. CDT.
