The Valparaiso men's tennis team made quick work of Detroit on Friday afternoon, dispatching the Titans 5-2 at the Titan Tennis Complex.

The freshman tandem of Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Jeffery Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) won their match handily at No. 2 doubles 8-1 over Ismail Kadyrov and Jay Joshi.

Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and Daniel Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North) seized the doubles point for the Crusaders by means of an 8-7 (7-4) victory at No. 1 doubles against Rafael Orantes/Patryk Koscielski.

Detroit (3-13, 0-4 HL) tied the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 4 open singles play. Orantes defeated Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) answered right back for the Brown and Gold with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in his match at No. 6.

Valpo took a commanding 3-1 lead in the match after Bacalla met little resistance at No. 2 singles. The freshman handed Joshi a 6-2, 6-0 loss.

The Titans received their last point of the match at No. 3 as Koscielski beat Eric Honert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) 6-2, 6-1.

The Crusaders clinched the match thanks to Schorsch's 25th singles win of the season, a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bobby Cawood.

Emhardt, a fellow freshman, won his singles match at No. 5 for good measure via a 6-2, 6-3 result.

The victory was the 16th on the year for Valparaiso, a new school record.

"I was really pleased with how our guys competed today. You can see the confidence building on a daily basis," head coach Jim Daugherty said.

The Crusaders will travel to Notre Dame on Sunday to face the Fighting Irish (15-8, 5-4 ACC) at 5:00 pm CT.
