Dunham-Freer Advances at ITA Championships

Valparaiso University's Ben Dunham-Freer (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands H.S.) was victorious in the qualifying draw on Thursday evening in his first round singles match at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships held in Ann Arbor, Mich., but teammate Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) fell in his match.

Dunham-Freer cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over George Wang of DePaul to advance to Friday's second round, where he will face seventh-seeded Brian Lipinski of Minnesota in the second match of the day. Lipinski won his first round match 6-2, 7-6 (7).

Kooyers drew the tough luck of facing fourth-seeded Mike McCarthy of Indiana in the first round. The sophomore battled before falling 6-4, 6-2.

Dunham-Freer and Kooyers will also team together on Friday afternoon in the first round of doubles play in the main draw. The duo will face Justin Hoeveler and Christian Tempke of Northwestern in the final match of the day.
