Valpo Concludes Play at Purdue Sunday

Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) registered a singles victory over Billy Heuer of Purdue on Sunday afternoon for Valparaiso’s lone win on the final day of the Boilermaker Invitational held in West Lafayette, Ind.

DeHerrera was a 6-0, 2-6, 10-5 victor in the lone flight of singles that was played on the day. 

Three Crusaders faced opponents from Ohio State.  Dino Marcan defeated Adam Whitmer (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview H.S.) 6-1, 6-3 while Balazs Novak downed Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) 6-0, 6-1.  Steven Williams downed Valpo’s Chris Baum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence H.S.) by the same score.

In other singles play, Jan-Frans Engelbrecht of Purdue topped Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) 6-2, 6-3 while Michael Woodson (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft H.S.) fell to Michael Basha of Western Michigan 6-1, 6-2.

Valpo also played three sets of doubles contests on Sunday.  Against Purdue, Litscher and Stump dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision to P.J. Rose and Eric Ramos.  Whitmer and DeHerrera suffered an 8-3 setback to Engelbrecht and Slavko Bijelica while Woodson and Baum fell by the same score to Matt Manasse and Paul Foley.

In the second doubles contests, Valpo faced Western Michigan.  Litscher and Stump teamed for an 8-3 defeat at the hands of Michael Calderone and Thomas Calderone while Whitmer and Baum were 8-4 losers against Pablo Alivarez and Brad Noel.  Michael Basha and Zeyad Montasser defeated Woodson and DeHerrera 8-2. 

The final flight of doubles saw the Crusaders battle Eastern Kentucky.  Hugo Klientavosky and Niklas Schroeder downed Baum and Whitmer 8-1 while Parul Verma and Philip Janz topped Litscher and Woodson 8-2.  Carles Pons Escanilla and Emilio Piriz defeated DeHerrera and Siddarth Mehta (South Bend, Ind./Clay H.S.) 8-6.

Valparaiso will open the dual match portion of the schedule on Friday evening in Muncie, Ind. against the Cardinals of Ball State.  First serve is set for 5 p.m. CST.
