Valpo Men Voted 5th in HL Coaches' Tennis Poll
Head coach Jim Daugherty embarks on his 27th season with the Crusaders. Valpo was tabbed fifth in Monday's HL Coaches' Poll.

The Horizon League announced its preseason coaches' poll Monday afternoon. Valparaiso received 16 points, good for fifth out of seven competing schools.

"It's really nice to get the recognition for our young players that have come in, but I believe they're underestimating the competitiveness of this young group," head coach Jim Daugherty said.

Daugherty is in his 27th season as head coach of the Crusader men's tennis program. Valpo welcomes four freshmen who encompass the 36th-ranked recruiting class in the country per Tennis Recruiting Network.

Green Bay received 35 points and the maximum six first-place votes. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams. The Phoenix claimed their first Horizon League regular season title last season.

Cleveland State garnered one first-place vote and 32 overall points in the survey. Last year's Horizon League Tournament saw the Vikings seize their fifth title in program history. Cleveland State returns six letterwinners from the 2013 team.

Wright State (23 points) squeezed by Youngstown State (22 points) for third place in the poll. UIC and Detroit rounded out the ballot at sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Valparaiso's schedule is expected to be announced Wednesday pending approval.
