Junior Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) was named Horizon League Men's Tennis Player of the Week Tuesday following a 4-0 run in singles play and a 3-0 doubles mark at the Valparaiso Fall Invitational earlier this month.
Savaglio captured a 6-3, 6-2 opening round victory over Cardinal Stritch's Caio Barros before he recorded a 6-0, 6-4 win versus Western Illinois' Chris Bunch on Friday. Savaglio came back Saturday to collect a 6-1, 7-6 triumph over Chicago State's Julian Chavez and a 6-0, 6-2 victory opposite Jimmy Le of Cardinal Stritch. The junior now boasts a 9-2 singles record.
In doubles play, Savaglio collaborated with Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) to score an 8-3 win against Cardinal Stritch's Donnersson Penna/Alef Guimaraes. Savaglio and Waak later defeated Chicago State's tandem of Julian Chavez and Chris Gonzalez, 8-4. The Crusader duo notched their third doubles victory Saturday with an 8-4 triumph versus Cardinal Stritch's Jimmy Le/Florian Fresse.
Valparaiso wraps up its fall season this week at the ITA Midwest Regionals in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Play gets underway Thursday at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.
