Crusaders Collect Pair of Wins in Orlando
Sophomore Jeffrey Schorsch went 2-0 in both singles and doubles play Saturday at the Lake Cane Courts in Orlando, Florida.

The Valparaiso men's tennis team downed Coe College, 5-2, on Saturday morning at the Lake Cane Courts in Orlando, Florida, before shutting out St. Thomas Aquinas (NY), 7-0, to open its spring trip with a pair of victories.

The Crusaders opened the morning with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles versus Coe. 

Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) rolled to a 6-1 win over Noah Sprinkel/Riley Galbraith atop doubles play. Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) and Danny Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North) followed with a 6-4 victory against Zack Decker and Chad Moklestad at the bottom of doubles play. The Kohawks managed to pick up a win at No. 2. The tandem of Brady Anderson and Ryan Hickman outlasted Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North)/Chase Hamilton (Hinsdale, Ill./Central), 7-6 (7-3).

In singles action, Schorsch won his first set handily at No. 2, 6-2, and was ahead 1-0 in the second when Galbraith retired. Anderson put Coe on the scoreboard after his 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Emhardt at No. 3.

Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland) tallied his team-leading 17th singles victory of the season after he dispatched Hickman, 6-3, 6-2. Bacalla subsequently secured the match for the Brown and Gold following his 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 defeat of Sprinkel at No. 1.

Decker won a hard-fought marathon over Brian Hickey (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-8 at No. 6. Junior Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) concluded morning play with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory at No. 5 versus Alex Bernt.

Valpo returned to the courts to face St. Thomas Aquinas College (NY) in the afternoon, but met little resistance from the Spartans. 

Dunn/Hickey ripped the lid off the afternoon with a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Bacalla and Oakes followed with their own 6-0 shutout of Andreu Ferragut and Gilberto Lantigua at No. 2. Schorsch and Emhardt went on to win their No. 1 doubles pairing versus Javier Munoz-Laguna/Aaron Stahl, 6-1.

The Crusaders dominated singles play from top to bottom. 

Schorsch defeated Munoz-Laguna, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. Dunn handed Ferragut a 6-1, 6-0 loss at No. 2.

Hamilton and Savaglio recorded flawless 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 5 and 4, respectively. 

Gardner improved to 18-3 after his 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 over Stahl. Hickey put the cherry on top of a fine day with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Thomas Schumann.

Valpo (11-2) returns to action Monday morning versus Quinnipiac (3-2) in Orlando. First serve is set for 8:00 am ET/7:00 am CT.
