Valpo's Title Bid Falls Short in Finals of HL Championship
(Brian Drumm)

Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) tallied their record-setting 30th doubles victory of the season in Sunday's Horizon League Championship match, but Green Bay registered a 4-0 win to capture the title at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette.

Schorsch and Emhardt kept Valpo's hopes of the doubles point alive with their 6-3 victory at No. 1 over Michael Tenzer/Florian Kraenzler. The result came after Green Bay's Leo Gomez Islinger/Michael Tebon got past Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli)/Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland) 6-2 at No. 3.

Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and Chase Hamilton (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) engaged in a fiery bout with Howard Scott/Joey Leto at No. 2 doubles with the point hanging in the balance. The Phoenix pair emerged with a 7-5 win.

Needing to claim just three singles matches to clinch, Green Bay took the first set in five of the six flights.

Waak fought back in the second set against Leto, but fell 6-1, 7-6 (4) at No. 6. Scott gave the Phoenix a commanding 3-0 advantage at No. 3 after he narrowly defeated Gardner, 6-4, 6-4.

Islinger and Bacalla went toe-to-toe at No. 2 before the former posted a 6-4, 7-6 (4) triumph to secure the match for Green Bay.

Schorsch was leading the third set 3-2 after splitting the first two with Tenzer at No. 1. Emhardt and Kraenzler were just getting underway in the third set of their duel at No. 4. Emhardt took the opening set in a tiebreaker before dropping the second set 6-4.

Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) was trailing 2-1 in the final set of his match against Joshua Schramm at No. 5. Dunn recovered to take the second set 6-2 after falling 6-1 in the opener.

The defeat lowers the curtain on the Crusaders' (21-7) season, one in which numerous season watermarks were set. Schorsch amended the school record he set last year for singles victories in a season (27) by winning 28 matches in this campaign. The 30 doubles victories realized by Schorsch and Emhardt are also the most ever recorded in a single season. Overall, six players notched 20 singles wins or greater.

Emhardt has already surpassed all but one Crusader (Nick Vuko, 1998-2002) for career doubles victories thanks to his 58 wins. With 55 singles wins accumulated, Schorsch will need just three to move into second place all-time for career singles victories.
