Just when he looked down and out, Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) found the strength to lift him and his teammate to a quarterfinal match against a Big Ten heavyweight at the ITA Midwest Regionals held at Notre Dame.
Schorsch, who defeated Wisconsin's Alexander Kokorev, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, early in the day in singles play felt the effects of fatigue in his round of 16 tilt against Michigan's Carter Lin. Lin did just enough to collect to a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win over Valpo's No. 1 player.
Pedialyte and an hour of rest helped provide Schorsch a set of relatively refreshed legs once doubles play commenced.
Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) dispatched Detroit's Patyrk Koscielski/Nicholas Solarewicz, 8-1, in round of 32 action. The duo went on to gut out an 8-4 triumph over Illinois' Toshiki Matsuya/Julian Childers in round of 16 play. Thanks to the victory, Schorsch and Emhardt will now face Northwestern's Strong Kirchheimer/Fedor Baev in quarterfinals play on Sunday afternoon.
Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland) and Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) made a strong showing against the second-seeded Alex Lawson/Quentin Monaghan in round of 32 doubles play. Lawson/Monaghan, the 28th-ranked doubles team in the nation, recorded an 8-4 win over the Crusader tandem.
Play continues Sunday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion at Notre Dame. Live scoring is available at ValpoAthletics.com.
