Comeback Attempt Falls Just Short for Schorsch/Emhardt
(Fred Villarruel)

Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel)'s magical run at the ITA Midwest Regionals came to a close Monday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Indiana. The 28th-ranked doubles team of Quentin Monaghan and Alex Lawson staved off a spirited second-set comeback from the Crusader duo to record a 6-1, 7-5 win in the title match.

Schorsch, who battled flu-like symptoms, and Emhardt brushed off a slow start and saved their best tennis for the second set. Emhardt dropped numerous volley winners at the net while Schorsch's blistering ground strokes caused apprehension for their opponents. Schorsch/Emhardt pulled ahead 5-4 in that second set, but Monaghan and Lawson brought it back even thanks to a pair of well-executed lobs.

With the set tied at 5-5, Schorsch/Emhardt found themselves ahead 30-0 on serve. However, the Notre Dame tandem came back and broke the Crusaders before clinching the match, 7-5.

Monday represented a bittersweet conclusion to a highly successful week at the Regionals. Schorsch/Emhardt went 5-1 in doubles play while defeating two ranked opponents, including Ohio State's Martin Joyce/Ralf Steinbach, the 19th-ranked team in the country.

Hope still exists that Schorsch and Emhardt can earn a wild card berth into next month's USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held in Flushing Meadows, New York. Three such berths comprise the exclusive 20-team tournament scheduled to begin Thursday, November 12th at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The field for the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships is expected to be announced later this week.
