Crusaders Roll Past Lewis, SJC in Saturday Doubleheader

The Valpo men's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Lewis and a 7-0 triumph against Saint Joseph's College (Ind.) in a Saturday doubleheader at The Courts of NWI.

The 63rd-ranked doubles tandem of Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) raised the curtain on the day with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Mate Srdanovic/Alan Braschinsky of Lewis. Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) and Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland) doubled up Andre Norasith/Brendan Peterson, 6-3, at No. 2 to grab the doubles point. Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) and Chad Kissell (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) made it a sweep following their 6-4 defeat of Anton Levitin and Chandler Stimpert at No. 3.

Senior Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) kicked off singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Stimpert. Kissell expelled Norasith, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead over the Flyers. Schorsch delivered the match-clinching point atop singles by virtue of his 6-1, 6-3 triumph versus Srdanovic. 

Waak was victorious at No. 4 singles thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 dismissal of Peterson. Braschinsky got Lewis on the scoreboard at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-2 result over Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North). Brian Hickey (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) finished off the early match with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Levitin at No. 6.

After a brief intermission, the Brown and Gold got right back to business with a 7-0 shutout of Saint Joseph's College.

All three Crusader doubles teams rattled off 6-2 victories over the Pumas.

Valpo cruised to straight-set wins in singles action.

Savaglio downed Moritz Gisy, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Gardner handed Samir Shammas a 6-2, 6-0 defeat at No. 3. The match was secured at No. 5 singles once Waak finished off his 6-2, 6-1 win against Valentin Meier. Hickey captured his eighth singles victory of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 result versus Lucas Jessen at No. 6. Emhardt got past Andrew Klump by score of 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Bacalla wrapped up the day with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 against Reid Imel. 

Valpo (13-5) has one final tune-up before Horizon League play begins on April 2nd. The Crusaders will travel to Cincinnati on Friday, March 25th to take on Xavier (7-4) at the Jim and Mary Brockhoff Family Tennis Facility. First serve is slated for 12 pm ET/11 am CT.
