Schorsch, Emhardt Claim Titles at Inaugural Valparaiso Open

Seniors Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) took home the singles title at the inaugural Valparaiso Open this past weekend before teaming up with Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) to clinch the doubles championship.

Overall, 60 players competed in the USTA-sanctioned event held at the Valpo Tennis Complex. Current and former collegiate players took part in the four-day event. Schorsch recorded a 6-3, 7-6 (2) victory over current pro and former University of Illinois standout, Ryler DeHeart. DeHeart, 32, was ranked as high as 174 back in 2010.

On the doubles side, Schorsch and Emhardt rallied for a wild 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 triumph in the championship match versus DeHeart and Illinois senior Julian Childers.

Joelle Kissell, a former North Carolina State standout, claimed the women's open singles title by virtue of her 6-1, 6-3 win over Sandhya Nagaraj. Kissell and Nagaraj paired up to seize the doubles championship versus Boone/Christina Johnson by a score of 6-0, 7-6 (5).
