Schorsch Notches First-Round Win in Oracle ITA Masters
Jeffrey Schorsch secured a comeback win in the first round of the ITA Masters on Thursday.

Valparaiso University men’s tennis senior Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg) opened the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. with a victory over Pepperdine’s Guilherme Hadlich on Thursday.

How It Happened

  • Schorsch, seeded 18th in the 32-team field, dropped the first set 6-3, but then rallied to advance with a three-set win. He pulled out a tightly-contested second set 7-5, then secured the dramatic triumph by prevailing 6-3 in the decisive set over Hadlich, the No. 15 seed.
  • Schorsch will face Kentucky’s Ryotaro Matsumura, who advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson’s Jacob Whalley, on Friday afternoon. Matsumura, the reigning SEC co-Freshman of the Year, is seeded second in the event.
  • The Oracle ITA Masters features only one man and one woman from each Division-I conference.
  • Schorsch now has 88 career wins, extending his school record.
