Crusaders Finish Third at DePauw Quadrangular

Matt Larson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Saint Viator H.S.) set a new school record in the hammer throw as Valparaiso finished in third place at the DePauw Quadrangular on Saturday in Greencastle, Ind.

The Crusaders tallied 180 points in the meet, 31 behind Indiana Wesleyan and 36 behind champion DePauw. Butler finished with 46 points in fourth place.

Larson won the hammer throw with a new school mark of 159'8", bettering Todd Goodrick's (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester H.S.) mark set last week. Goodrick finished second in the event with a toss of 154'9" as the Crusaders swept the first six places in the hammer. Goodrick won the shot put with a heave of 46'5 ¼" while Bryan Bell (Bellevue, Neb./East H.S.) was second just 9 ¼" behind.

Eric Smith (Portage, Ind./Portage H.S.) won the discus for the Brown and gold with a toss of 150'6" while Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township H.S.) was second with a mark of 148'11". Joshua Lee (Yellow Jacket, Colo./Montezuma-Cortez H.S.) won the long jump for Valpo with a leap of 21'10".

On the track, Valpo was victorious in both hurdles events. Sean Barfield (University Place, Wash./Curtis H.S.) took home top honors in the 110m event with a time of 15.53 seconds, setting a new meet record. Zach Janush (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick H.S.) won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.62.

Valpo will head to the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio on Friday and Saturday.
