Bell Sets School Mark at Redbird Invitational

Bryan Bell (Bellevue, Neb../East H.S.) set a new school record in the weight throw for Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders competed in the Redbird Invitational in Bloomington, Ill.

Bell finished fourth in the event with a toss of 56'11 ¾", shattering the old mark of 52'8 that he had previously set in 2004.

Elliot Powell (Orange, Calif./Santa Ana H.S.) won a pair of events on the afternoon for the Brown and Gold. He tied for top honors in the 60m dash with a time of 7.01 seconds. The senior also won the 200m dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 22.44 seconds.

Joshua Lee (Yellow Jacket, Colo./Montezuma-Cortez H.S.) finished runner-up in the long jump with his leap of 21'6". Jonathan Braun tied for second in the high jump, clearing 6'0", while Todd Goodrick (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester H.S.) earned a second place finish in the shot put with a heave of 51'5 ¾". Brian Schultz finished third in the triple jump, leaping 40'0".

Valpo also tallied several fourth place finishes on the day. Jeff Moscinski (Rockford, Ill./Christian Life H.S.) earned that position with his time of 52.52 seconds in the 400m dash, while Jason Douthett (Highland, Ind./Highland H.S.) placed fourth in the 800m run with a time of 2:00.76.

The Crusaders will return to action next Friday night when a select group of individuals will compete at the Meyo Invitational held in Notre Dame, Ind. The first event begins at 6 p.m. CST.
