Valparaiso recorded victories in two throwing events as the Crusaders took to the track at the Butler Twilight on Saturday.
Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township H.S.) continued his strong effort in the throws this year for the Crusaders, bringing home a victory in the hammer throw (181'9") and a runner-up finish in the discus throw (159'2"), while Kristopher Schmautz (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate H.S./Montana) captured top honors in the javelin throw with his toss of 162'5".
Bartholomew led a 1-2-3 Valpo sweep in the hammer, as Jeff Swihart (Wakarusa, Ind./Northwood H.S.) and Matt Stohs (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission NW H.S.) finished behind him with personal-best marks of 153'9" and 149'5", respectively. Swihart set a second PR in the shot put with his toss of 46'4 ¾", good for fifth place.
Erik Lindamood (Warrenton, Va./Liberty H.S.) also set two personal bests on the day, taking fourth place with a toss of 46'8" in the shot put and capturing sixth in the discus throw (136'9").
Wesley Kosko (Emporia, Kan./Emporia H.S.) posted the only top-five for the Brown and Gold on the track, finishing fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.73 seconds.
Valparaiso will look to improve upon last year's fifth-place finish when the Crusaders return to the track at the Mid-Continent Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet, taking place in Macomb, Ill., will begin Thursday, May 11 at 9:30 a.m.
